Grip Strength: A Small Test That Says a Lot

A grip strength test measures how hard you can squeeze, usually with a hand dynamometer. Grip is a surprisingly good marker of overall strength and healthy ageing. We track it as a simple, motivating fitness signal, not as a medical diagnosis, and we build it through your training over time.

It sounds almost too simple, but how hard you can squeeze says a lot about your overall strength. Grip strength tends to track with total-body strength and is widely used as a marker of healthy ageing. A quick squeeze on a hand dynamometer gives us a number that is easy to measure, easy to repeat, and genuinely useful to follow over the years.

For our older clients especially, grip is a friendly, non-intimidating place to start measuring strength. There is no barbell to fear, just a firm squeeze. And because grip carries over into daily life, carrying groceries up to the condo, opening jars, holding a rail on a bumpy bus, improving it has real, felt payoffs beyond the number itself.

Why grip strength matters

Grip is closely tied to overall muscular strength, which is why it is such a handy proxy. It is also one of the markers researchers use when looking at strength and healthy ageing, so keeping your grip strong is a sensible goal well into later life.

Day to day, a strong grip means easier carrying, better control in the gym, and more confidence holding on when balance is tested. It quietly underpins a lot of what we do.

What we measure and track

  • Maximum squeeze on a hand dynamometer, each hand
  • Differences between your left and right sides
  • Your own trend over weeks and months
  • How grip lines up with your other strength gains
  • Everyday tasks getting easier as it improves

How the grip test runs

  1. We set the dynamometer to fit your hand comfortably
  2. You squeeze as hard as you can for a couple of seconds
  3. We test each hand, usually best of a few tries
  4. We record both sides and note any big imbalance
  5. We retest periodically to track your progress

A fitness signal, not a diagnosis

Grip is a useful strength marker, but a single number does not diagnose your health. If your grip is very weak, drops noticeably, or one hand suddenly weakens, we treat that as a reason to see a doctor, not just a training target. As always, medical questions go to medical professionals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does grip strength matter so much?+

It closely tracks overall body strength and is a well-known marker of healthy ageing. A strong grip also makes daily tasks like carrying and holding on easier, so it is worth building and keeping.

Is a grip test hard or intimidating?+

Not at all. It is just a firm squeeze on a device for a couple of seconds. Many older clients like that it measures strength without any barbells or scary-looking gym equipment.

One of my hands is much weaker, is that bad?+

A small difference between hands is normal. A big or sudden difference, or a noticeable drop, is worth mentioning to a doctor. We track it as a signal, not as a diagnosis on its own.

Can training improve my grip?+

Yes. Grip responds well to carrying, holding and pulling work built into your sessions. Many clients see it climb over the weeks, alongside easier groceries and a firmer hold on daily tasks.
