The single-leg balance test times how long you can stay steady on each leg, giving a clear read on your stability and the ankle and hip control that keeps you upright. It is quick, needs no equipment, and is one of the more telling checks for fall risk as we age.

We always do it safely, near a wall or sturdy chair, ready to steady you. This is a fitness marker, not a stunt. A short time on one leg is simply your starting point, and balance is one of those things that improves noticeably with a bit of consistent practice, which makes it a rewarding number to watch climb.

What single-leg balance reveals

Holding one leg steady draws on ankle and hip stability, core control and the constant micro-adjustments your body makes to stay upright. How long you can do it is a good indicator of overall balance and, particularly for older adults, of fall risk in everyday life.

We usually test with eyes open, and sometimes note how a brief eyes-closed hold feels, since removing vision makes balance much harder and tells us how much your body relies on other senses.

How to do the balance test safely

  1. Stand near a wall or sturdy chair you can grab
  2. Lift one foot and start timing how long you stay steady
  3. Stop when you touch down, grab support, or wobble badly
  4. Test both legs and note any difference between sides
  5. Retest every few weeks to see your steadiness improve

A marker, not a medical test

This test screens fitness and fall risk, it does not diagnose anything. If your balance is suddenly much worse, is very one-sided, or comes with dizziness, numbness or vision changes, that points to a doctor first, not more balance drills. We will always say so and refer rather than train around a possible medical issue.
